Although she was a popular writer, even revered, during her lifetime, few knew that Jane Austen was the woman behind her novels. Jane Austen wrote anonymously and her name never appeared on a single novel in her lifetime.
She was a pioneer in realistic romantic fiction and her work rejected that of the sentimentalists who were favoured in her lifetime. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that her work was recognized for its literary genius.
Not only have her novels touched millions of souls over the past two hundred years, today Jane Austen is also a figure of perseverance, a woman who lived by her own rules, followed her dreams and succeeded – despite the "rules" of contemporary society.
Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) is the author of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818).
